You can indent paragraphs in your document from the left margin, the right margin, or both the margins. My painful workaround has been to replace the tab stops in the section headings with spaces, so unless I use a fixed-pitch font, no matter how much I add and delete individual spaces in the headings, the best I can do for inner column alignment is a drunken vertical-ish line. If I set tab stops in the headings of the document proper and then do an “update FIELD” in the TOC, Word decides to strip out the tabs and replace with spaces in the auto-built/updated version, leaving me with the left and right tabs only and grossly misaligned inner columns.ĪND THE MANGLED VERSION WITH PARAGRAPH MARKS ENABLED …HAND-BUILT WITH PARAGRAPH MARKS TURNED ON Note that I used the “…” leader between tabs as a horizontal visual alignment guide and not hand-typed ‘.’ characters: Below is a Picasa link to a hand-built TOC that I want to be able to create with the auto-bulid/auto-update TOC feature in MS Word as I extend such a document. I’d like to have multiple tab stops in a TOC in addition to the left margin and right page number – to left-align three other columns. I have a more complex problem with auto building a TOC. (The reason you set them to 1.5 cm is to allow for the extra space taken up by the extra numbers in the Heading 3 level.) Then set all the paragraph indentations to 0 cm and the left tab stops to, say, 1.5 cm. If you want something that looks like this: TOC 3: Paragraph indentation 2 cm, hanging 1.25 cm Tab stops 3.5 cm (left) and 16 cm (right).TOC 2: Paragraph indentation 1 cm, hanging 1.25 cm Tab stops 2 cm (left) and 16 cm (right).TOC 1: Paragraph indentation 0 cm Tab stops 1 cm (left) and 16 cm (right). You’ll need to modify the TOC styles so they are similar to these (all values in cm): In answer to Praveen’s question in the Comments, here’s how to set the various left alignments. Check everything’s as you want it make further modifications as necessary.Click OK when you’re asked to replace the Table of Contents. When you’re finished, click OK to close the Style window.17 cm) for the right tab stop position for each. Repeat steps 4 to 8 for the other styles (TOC 2, TOC 3) that have tab stops you want to modify.Click OK again to return to the Style window.

There are probably a couple of ways of adjusting the right tab position, but here’s a method that works for me.
